Tumblr doubled its revenue after trolling Twitter with paid verification

Twitter’s trolling of Tumblr, which has introduced a parody paid subscription, has already borne fruit for the company in the form of a 125% increase in revenue from in-app purchases on iOS since November. TechCrunch shares the numbers.

Tumblr has released its own “answer” to paid verification for Twitter accounts, adding its own cosmetic (and only) account ticks.

According to new data provided to TechCrunch by app analytics company Sensor Tower, user spending on Tumblr’s iOS app has increased 125% since November 2022 (when compared to the previous three months), reaching $263,000 in net revenue for the company.

Looking more “broadly,” Tumblr’s revenue isn’t growing as much. According to Sensor Tower, revenue from in-app purchases on iOS was up 19% over the previous ten months before Tumblr launched its mock paid subscription.
