The best comedians of all time

A comic, from the German Komiker, Komikus, is an actor who performs comic roles. Recently in our country, comedians, and the stand-up genre in general, have been gaining in popularity. Today we decided to look back at the pioneers – the most famous comic actors in the world.

Bourville (André Robert Rembourg)

In 1937, Rembourg was drafted into the army, where he played in the regimental orchestra and performed in song contests. After the service he remained in Paris, successfully passed a number of pop competitions and performed in a variety show.

The young coupletist was the talk of the whole of Paris. But his career is interrupted by the Second World War. He gets to the front, and then captured. After that he had to live illegally in occupied Paris.

Bourville went to the front in World War II, and then in captivity.

During the occupation, with a small troupe of the famous singer Borda, he began to travel around the country as an accordionist-accompanist, often performing for the soldiers. Bourville worked up his own repertoire for variety shows and in 1941 he signed his first solo contract. And by the end of the war André had already become a real star of the music-hall.

Trying to imitate his idol Fernandel, Bourville gradually creates his comic mask of a simple peasant. This is what he came to the cinema in 1945.

In most of his films Bourville played in brilliant duets – Michel Morgan, Jean Marais, Jean Gabin. But particularly scintillating were the comedies, in which he played with Louis de Funes. They played on the contrast – the hero de Funes and sprays energy, and simpleton Bourville remains imperturbable in any situation.

Alfred Hawthorne “Benny” Hill.

English actor, comedian. Creator of the internationally popular show The Benny Hill Show. He was also known as a master of parody.

On this show he performed not only as an actor but also as a director, musician and songwriter. For 30 years the show was the most popular comedy show around the world, and even now many TV stations buy the rights to it.

The Benny Hill Show was the most popular show in the world for 30 years

In 1971, The Benny Hill Show won the British Television Academy Award for Best Entertainment Program.

After 30 years, there was a crisis in Benny Hill’s work. People on the streets, meeting him, laughed, teased, sometimes even rudely. One day in his program, Benny Hill “walked all over” the British government and the royal family. As a result, in 1982, Margaret Thatcher personally ordered that every program of Hill’s be severely censored. Over 10 years, the commission rejected 150 hours of footage. The comedian withdrew into himself, began to drink, and suffered severe depression.

Despite Benny Hill’s success, he never married or had children.

Despite the enormous success of his show and the fortune he made, Benny Hill never married or had children, though he was twice in love and was rejected both times. He had no apartment of his own and no car.

So too was a multi-part film about the adventures of the Gendarme and his subordinates, made in the 1960s. Louis de Funès himself said of his acting career thus:

“I don’t regret the slowness of my career. I don’t regret the slowness of my career. When I was still an unknown, I tried to color the details, the mimics, the gestures of the small roles that I was assigned. In this way I acquired some comic baggage, without which I could not have made a career. Therefore, if I start again, I would not give up this path.”
